During this trip we will attempt to observe humpback whales and killer whales that are expected to migrate to the wild coast of Troms. This activity takes place at a time when the nights are long which also allows to admire the northern lights far away from others artificial lights. While on the field, we can observe otters, seals, eagles and many sea birds wintering in Northern Norway.

An itinerant base camp under the northern lights

Every night the yacht, comfortable polar base camp stops at anchor or at berth in well protected bays where it is sometimes possible to go ashore for a walk or just to stretch your legs before dinner . The evening is an opportunity to revisit the highlights of the day in pictures photos or videos.

The children, accompanied by an adult, are accepted from 10 years old.

Program of stay

Arrival at Tromsø airport on Friday afternoon. Boarding immediately after transfer from airport. “Southern Star” will be moored in the center of Tromsø. Installation on board for 6 nights. After dinner, you can immerse yourself in the quaint atmosphere of Norwegian Friday evening by going for a drink in the numerous bars of Tromsø downtown the “little Paris of the north”.

Saturday morning, we set sail towards the area where orcas and whales are expected to be.

Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday “Southern Star” will sail in the area following as close as possible the migration of marine mammals.

Wednesday afternoon, return to Tromsø.

9:00 Thursday morning, transfer to the airport, departure from Tromsø.

This program is given for information only and may be influenced by the weather conditions and herring’s migration which does not give any guarantee for observation of mammals. From one year to the other, orcas and whales are not at the same place. If they are in the vicinity of Tromsø, we can take half day more in Tromsø to visit museums or take the cable car to watch the view from the upper part. In 2018, orcas and humpback whales was at one day of navigation from Tromsø. It gave us no opportunity to spent much time in Tromsø. We made very good observations every week of our program, running from Nov 16th to January 3rd.
